St Edmunds Society was formed in 1967 by a group of local people who were worried about the number of young men sleeping rough in Norwich. The hostel on Earlham Road was opened the following year.
Today the Society still exists to alleviate the problems that homeless young men face by providing a stable residential environment in which residents are encouraged to develop independent living skills
St Edmunds Society provides
Emergency and temporary accommodation for 15 young men in its supported housing unit which is staffed 24 hours a day, providing residents with a high level of support and supervision.
Supported move-on accommodation to help individuals settle into independent living.
Ongoing, support for residents moving into their own accommodation via Stonham Homestay.
Ed’s Basement, a day centre offering support, advice and signposting to other services for vulnerable young adults facing housing, benefits, drugs, alcohol, relationship breakdown issues.
A skills development project providing practical training to enhance future employment prospects and independent living. Subjects include carpentry and joinery, plastering, wall and floor tiling, painting and decorating, numeracy, literacy and IT.
Residents at the supported housing unit are usually from Norfolk and North Suffolk which proves that even the most rural locations have problems with homelessness. Many are in trouble with the law and are often demoralised with life, staff at St Edmunds are able to offer supportive help and look at ways of building self esteem, confidence and morale.
