Offering a successful alternative to mainstream education for individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. The programme is flexible and not restricted to term times providing learning tailored to the individual.

St Edmunds Society Skills Development Project is an established carpentry and joinery training workshop with other practical skills training provided as necessary. On offer is a choice of accreditation- City and Guilds Level 1 and National Open College Network Levels 1 and 2 in a variety of carpentry, joinery and furniture making units. In addition we have recently opened a Finishing Trades Project that provides plastering, painting and decorating and wall and floor tiling courses.

The project provides an alternative to mainstream education for individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. Training is not restricted to school term dates so enrollment can be at any time that best suits the individual.

Course’s range from 30 to 300 guided learning hours, all demonstrate safe practices in health and safety and the necessary personal protective equipment is provided.

Embedded numeracy and literacy together with ICT skills are included in the  courses with an opportunity to concentrate further in theses areas with a dedicated Literacy and Numeracy Tutor.

Personal social development is also a key part of the training to increase the social and communication skills of all students.

All tutors are professionally trained with enhanced CRB checks and have a wealth of experience in their subject.

Class sizes cater for no more than 8 students at a time giving a learning ratio of 4:1 which ensures all students are given the right amount of support.

Help and advice is also provided to enable students to progress to next step in either further education, employment or training.

Referrals
Referrals are received from a variety of schools and agencies. We currently work closely with Norfolk County Council Adult Education, Norwich City College, Connexions Norfolk as well as local schools and Childrens Services.

We are happy to discuss specific needs referrals beforehand to access suitability. Taster sessions are available to prospective students where individuals spend half a day being introduced to the facilities and participate in a small practical project. At the start of each course an induction will be carried out by one of the tutors and individual needs tailored to as the course progresses.

Course fees
Education referrals: £70 per pupil per day
£35 per half day

Project success
During the first year of operation more than 80 students have participated in one of our
courses with over 30% of those progressing into further education, employment or
training. In addition to this students on an alternative curriculum have been retained for
the whole of the placement and beyond.

In 2009 5 students over 16 years returned to us for further training and were engaged in training until they felt ready to progress to further education, training or employment.

Future plans
As demand for the project increases we continue to look a ways to develop the training on offer and give students more choice.

Future development plans include extending the programme to offer up to Level 2 awards within the Construction Industry Training Board range of accreditation, in addition we are currently considering providing this service in other areas of Norfolk.. We always welcome any ideas or suggestions to enhance or improve the service currently on offer for the benefit of the students attending.

Private referrals 30 hour course- £350.
