Painting and Decorating Course
I’m Stacey Williams and I’m the painting and decorating tutor here at St-Eds. I’m a qualified painter and decorator by trade with over 12 years experience. I started out as an apprentice with a large decorating contractor in Norfolk and went on to complete a 3 year apprenticeship course to gain my NVQ Level 3. Having completed a construction site supervisors safety course, I became a supervisor for the same company- which employed around 60 qualified decorators
Within the painting and decorating department we strive to teach the learners the basics of P&D. The first and most important part of this is the health and safety aspect of all the tools and materials that will be used. When the students first come to my area I assess them by teaching basic decorating which entails the preparation involved with decorating and moving on to painting a room starting with a ceiling and walls. This gives me an idea of strengths and weaknesses that can be addressed and gives the learners confidence before starting their progression to the qualifications that I deliver.
003 Painting Techniques: The learner is required to mark out a pattern on a wall to given dimensions. They are then required to paint set areas with light/dark colours and then a complimentary colour to the colours chosen and this is all within a tolerance of +/-3mm.
114 Painting a Panel Door: The students are shown how to use a hot air gun to remove paint from a panel. They are then taught the paint system and I take them through this step-by-step, again to build confidence in them before putting them in for this assessment.
We then move on to the papering and papering skills.
111 Painting and Wallpapering Skills: This is the area that most learners deem the most daunting but then find it the easiest. They are taught about all different types of wallpaper and finishes for walls. They use a plain paper to practice with and different paints to then decorate the paper.
113 Hanging Pattern paper to Internal and External Corners and Painting Skirting Boards: This is the last unit that I deliver and this teaches the learner about pattern matching and the skills needed to cut into internal and external corners.
